Senator Asks Industry To Consider The Harm Of Loot Boxes, Industry Does Nothing

A US Senator has urged the ESRB and ESA to look at the potential harm loot boxes pose to vulnerable customers. The industry’s guard dogs, however, continue to do nothing even as politicians close in.

Doing nothing is not going to help the industry, not when there are politicians who are prepared to do *something*.

  1. If hyper-advanced post-scarcity Aliens came down from the stars to ask the triple A companies to reconsider their greed tomorrow the EAs of the world still wouldn’t fill the slightest iota of moral shame.

  3. The industry does have an answer Jim! However, it can only be found in the Special Premium Live Service-based Pride and Accomplishment Gold Edition Day One Expansion Season Pass Limited Loot Box!

  4. If the ESRB where to come out and say loot boxes can only be placed in M rated games then I am prettu sure we will see the end of lot boxes.

  5. i am curious, what EA, Activision-blizzard, ubisoft etc etc CEOs and PRs think about all of this

  7. I mean to be fair, the human qualities of major game publisher and US government officials are about the same. It’s like a melting blood sucking, all-consuming vampire slime trying to convince another one of its kind to eat less children so that it can sell them blood-taste-enhancement pills.

  8. God damn. How can they fuck this up so much.

I dunno. They can’t do anything about tools specifically designed to kill things since that lobby flings them cash; all it will take is some well-placed bribes and these fuckers will do whatever they like for as long as they like.

    Yay capitalism.

  10. What an Ouroboros of shit the game industry is now.

  11. Why don’t you just do a collaboration with YongYea? I think you two would get along great.

  15. They don’t use similar psychological principals… they use the _exact same_ psychological principals. Everything from the randomized rewards to the flashy unpacking animations are ripped straight from casinos.

But the way the industry sees it is “We’re making so much money, how can it possibly be bad?”

  16. There's a starman waiting in the sky

    Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you’re okay
    Money, it’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
    New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I’ll buy me a football team

  17. I’m pretty sure Jim mentioned this happening in a Jimquisition episode a while ago though I forgot the title of it.

  18. Extra Credits just put up a video about making “ethical” lootboxes and defended the use of lootboxes…ppffftttttt
