New world record as of 2/16/2018!
I saved 1 framerule over the world record in 4-2, but lost 1 framerule in 8-3 by not attempting 8-3 flagpole glitch. I played 8-4 5 frames faster than the previous record, but there was 1 frame of lag when I did the bullet bill glitch in 8-2, so this is a new world record by 4 frames!
This run was played on a real NES with an original NES controller. If anything looks unusual to you in this speedrun, look through this list of frequently asked questions:
Q: How did you skip the flag coming down in 1-1 and 4-1?
A: A very precise jump at the bottom of the flagpole makes the flag not come down. Someone by the name of Sockfolder figured out a somewhat consistent way for humans to do this.
Q: Why did you not die when you touched the piranha plants?
A: This is an old game and a lot of the enemy hitboxes aren’t in line with the enemy sprites. Look at this picture to see what i mean http://i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you get inside the wall in 4-2? Why did the pipe take you to the warp zone? Aren’t you supposed to climb the vine?
A: Very precise inputs make it possible to get inside the wall. This lets us change how close mario is to the right edge of the screen and tricks the game into sending you to the wrong place. I do a similar thing in the 3rd room of 8-4.
Q: What did you do at the flagpole in 8-2?
A: This is similar to the glitch I did in 1-1 to skip the flagpole, but even better. Look at this picture for details: http://i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you jump off the pipe in 8-4?
A: By jumping at a very precise spot on the pipe Mario will actually stand inside of the pipe for 1/60th of a second, and if you press the jump button during this period of time you will jump. More info on this image: http://i.imgur.com/DpY0WaS.png
Q: How did you not die to bowser’s hammers?
A: Sometimes you simply jump through a gap in the hammers, and sometimes you actually go right through a hammer. This is because the game can’t always handle having all those hammers on screen at once, so some of them don’t have hitboxes.

Wow! Never thought darbian’s WR only lasted 4 months. Almost perfect run except for the lag in 8-2. 8-4 (especially the turnaround room) is REALLY good! Now you have SMB any% and warpless WR. Hail, new SMB king Kosmic!
(BTW, I believe you could get less chance getting a lag frame in 8-2 if you don’t press any buttons before touching the flagpole. Haven’t tested it, though.)
I can’t believe that after only four months, Darbian’s record has been beaten. Welcome back to the top, Kosmic! Until someone adds the 1-2 clip, and the 8-3 FPG back in, this record seems unbeatable. Amazing stuff!!
