Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle Selling 50% Of Its Roster As DLC

With 20 playable characters at launch and a further 20 confirmed DLC characters, the latest Blazblue has Arc System Works gating off half its roster.

It’s part of a growing trend in “roster-based” games where fighting and sports titles are seeing just how far they can push the relegation of playable characters to DLC.

And in a world where we’ve become so used to “GOTY” and “Complete” editions of games, I have to ask… why should anybody buy this game at launch?

    Oh boy, here we go.
This is why you don’t lock half of your characters behind a DLC in a fighting game.
Because that means that you won’t be able to accurately check which one fits your playstyle the most. In such, ruining the game for you.

  2. Looks like BlazBlue is following the Crapcom approach. How unfortunate.

  3. Only reason i was gonna buy this was rwby characters in a main fighting game and half of them are probably dlc…

Guess im gonna wait for a collectors edition

  4. This was the one of the few fighting game companies that didn’t pull this shit, well there goes another game serise I no longer trust..

  5. This is further evidence that games developed as skeletal “DLC Platforms” are spreading across all game genres. It would be funny if it wasn’t so unforgivably disgusting.

  6. Blake Belladona from Rewbwey.

  7. And of course they divide Team RWBY in this game :/ a lot of RWBY fans were looking forward to getting this game as it did open the possibility of a RWBY fighter, but DAMMIT Arc, you’re making this harder for us. I suppose I’ll just have to wait then, and hopefully the complete edition of this game will sell well enough to where they’ll decide to make an actually RWBY fighting game where this will no doubt happen again. Buuut I digress X.x

It’s bad enough they are doing this, but with recycled characters used from previous games, AND they cut out the English dub to save money; they said it was to save time with Central Fiction (yes I know the BlazBlue titles are ridiculous), but let’s be real. With shitty actions like this, it’s clear ArcSys only wants your money. It sucks even more because ArcSys was my go-to for fighting games, and even they are pulling this garbage. I mean they already did stupid things like ruining Millia Rage in the Xrd, but still, this is disheartening.

As a fan, I will NOT be supporting this in the slightest..

  9. The leeches from Mortal Kombat are taking notes…

  10. I was actually looking forward to this game. Well there goes one game off my list.

  11. I love ArcSys games but I cannot agree with this practice, will get Dragon Ball FighterZ instead. I just hope that if this game gets poor sales, which I doubt, it won’t turn off ArcSys from making a Persona 5 fighting game spin-off (without hiding 50% of the roster behind DLC, of course)

Edit: Thank you for the replies giving me information about the FighterZ DLC. I disagree with how much is hidden behind a paywall for that game too but it’s better than what Cross Battle’s doing.

  12. Okay I could SORT OF understand this were the announced DLC character being somebody like Pyrrha Nikos or Jaune Arc
BUT IT’S ONE OF THE 4 MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE WHOLE SERIES
HER NAME’S PART OF THE TITLE
And after googling turns out only Ruby and Weiss are even in the game right now
    What the fuck dude
I get that for a crossover game series like J-Stars or Smash Bros. it makes sense for only 1 or 2 characters per series because there’s like 20-40 different franchises in said crossover’s rosters
But this game is only 4 franchises
One of those series has 4 main TITULAR characters in it
And only 2 of said characters are in the base game
What the fuck ArcSys I was just beginning to like you with Dragon Ball FighterZ being so good then you do this
I get that you already have sprites and movesets to use for the other series whereas RWBY’s new to the genre altogether but come on
    Titular character

  13. Blazblue, Persona and RWBY

Seriously, why the hell would someone think that this clusterfuck of a crossover wasn’t being made just because licensings are ending and they needed a quick cash ?

  14. For those of you not in the know with RWBY: Blake Belladonna is one of the main characters in the series. Hell, the B in RWBY comes from her name. Excluding such a core character like this is… well, I almost said that it’d be like a Street Fighter game where Guile is DLC, but as it turned out THEY ACTUALLY FUCKING DID THAT WITH STREET FIGHTER V.

And it turns out it’s the same for Yang Xiao Long, another main character who proves the Y in RWBY.

  15. I joked about this happening and here it is

  16. “Jim you mispronounced all those words…”

We can tell who the new viewers are. 😀

  17. I forgot which company it was but I heard a dev say that this makes sense for fighting games because players usually just pick a single character and stick with them. Seems hard to pick a character to stick with when I gotta play 5$ just to try them out though

  18. I was going to ask you on Twitter about this but refrained since I wasn’t sure you would know what BlazBlue is. I hope this game fails since the developer for this game was being looked at as a bastion of hope for fans who felt burnt by Capcom fighting games before this news. The fan backlash against this game among the Fighting Game Community has been glorious to say the least.

  19. *Capcom did it first*

  20. Good old Scamco.
