JACK! Heres a tip buddy! Use a shovel when digging stuff. If you use something else, it would break that other item way faster. And use coal(the stuff that has black spots on it) as fuel for the furnace, OR you can smelt ore logs to make charcoal which you can also use as fuel. Spiders can climb things, so if you dont have a roof, they could climb over it and kill you. Good luck! And use the iron to make iron armor first. I have a feeling your probably going to need it.
You can tame wolves with bones. They will follow you around and protect you from hostile mobs. They spawn frequently in Taiga Biomes. Lucky for you your live by a taiga biome.
Also, you can smelt ore with a Furnace. You can make charcoal by smelting wood in a furnace. You can combine charcoal with sticks to make torches until you find coal.
