We’ve done TONS of research on Sonic’s speed over the years. From how fast he REALLY is to if he can even survive his own speed – we’ve covered it all! Well, that’s only partially true. Until now we’ve only turned our Theorist eyes towards the blue hedgehog. That ends today! Enter Tails, the lovable fox sidekick. He’s famous for helicoptering his way around with his, you guessed it, tails. What I wanted to know was whether or not Tails SHOULD actually be able to fly. Today Theorists, we are going to find out if this fox is flying high or about to crash and burn!

Okay, before I even watch this I know what you’re gonna say. I’ve seen hundreds of people basically laugh at how stupid Tails is as you can’t have a spinning double tails without a motor and biological creatures can’t function that way. Also the tails are not aerodynamic and they are not solid so lift is basically impossible.

I know that this is extremely unrealistic (as all of this is) but Tails could possibly have one tail spinning in one direction while the other spins in the opposite. I know this isn’t how it actually works but that’s something that might be a possibility.
Or he has his jet shoes from Sonic Adventure. “But we don’t see them!!!”, so what, lulz, it’s a cartoon, they don’t have to draw every single detail.
Tbh, my headcanon is that all the characters have their Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2 upgrades. Knuckles looked so cool with his metal claws and sunglasses.

Under my theory, Tails’ tails are literally just a glamour rotor. As seen in many of the cutscenes in newer games, he often flies in an upright position with his tails circling behind him, which under normal circumstances would provide no lift and instead pull him backward. Additionally, his tails are shown spinning way too slow to produce enough lift and to prove this point there is no downdraft from them. He has an IQ of 300 and outmatches most engineering professionals at their craft despite being, what, ten years old? So I don’t think something like telekinesis is off the table. And to explain the canon story of him “learning to use his two tails for flight to keep up with Sonic,” I think he thinks he’s actually using his tails for flight and doesn’t realize he’s holding himself up telekinetically. That would also explain why he never uses his telekinetic abilities on anything else since he doesn’t even know he can.
Or he was just exposed to Chaos energy that gives him his powers, and Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy were, too.
That’s…not a bad theory. Considering Silver the Hedgehog, that is completely possible.
