Final Fantasy VII Remake – A Work Of Subversive Genius (Jimpressions)

Final Fantasy VII Remake is perhaps the most anticipated videogame of all time, and a well-received demo made it appear as if it would be everything fans wanted.

It isn’t.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is something new. It’s something different. It’s bold, and clever, and overwhelmingly arrogant. It’s contentious, controversial, conceited, and some people may view it as simply a… con.

But if it ain’t a subversive masterpiece nonetheless, I don’t know what is.

  1. That intro should have been the trailer for the actual game.

  2. Man that part when sephiroth confessed his undying love for cloud was insane.

  3. Jim talking so passionately about a game is so uplifting to me. It reminds me that Jim loves games so much that he gives it so much tough love, because we can get incredible things if the industry is willing to change.

  4. While playing it instantly clicked that this is the same difference between the original Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Evangelion Rebuild Films 1.0 / 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.0+1.0 (dear god). So FInal Fantasy 7.7.7.7.7.7.7 Rebuild, now give me a Gendo skin for Sephiroth!!!

  5. Alex Yang-Nikodym

This kinda reminds me of Marvel’s movie heroes vs their comic counterparts, except (almost) no one is shitting their pants about the portrayal of their favourite characters in those.

  6. “Adaptation” is a good way to put it. I never thought of it that way before, but that description contextualizes this game really well.

  7. I loved the bitch slap fest between sephiroth and tifa over cloud at the end.
    While barret just ate popcorn

  8. Jim: “I said a thing, and people called me monster and a sham but it turns out I was right”

at this point this should be the moto of the channel

  9. I love that intro, out of every change, they kept that intact, climbing every step till 59.

  10. “The worst part about Midgar were the dementors”

  11. 0:12
Simple, and clean, is the way that *YOURE* making *ME* feel tonight, Jim. It’s hard to let it go.

  12. Now I want two spin-offs: “Tifa beats up EVERYBODY” and “Drag Queen Cloud takes the showbiz by storm”

  13. I’m fine with the changes, I love the extra depth they’ve given to characters especially Avalanche. What I DON’T like is HOW they did these changes. I don’t want Kingdom Hearts bullshit “fate ghosts” being shoved down my throat to justify these changes, there are SO many different ways they could have gone about this and the way they did was probably one of the worst possible

  14. I loved the remake, but I don’t trust Nomura when it comes to telling a story. I hope SE reins him in a little bit at least. This reimagining will either go REALLY well or REALLY poorly.

  15. I feel like I would be more on board with this if I hadn’t experienced Nomura’s other crazy ride lol. I’ve just got no trust left!

  16. Can’t wait for Jim’s Wastelanders review. Fallout 76 exhumed.

  17. Cloud isn’t a personality void, this is the best he’s been characterized since the original, perhaps ever.

  18. Cloud is trying to present himself as emotionless but constantly failing, that’s kinda the point of his character.
