So when’s the Magic The Gathering Netflix series coming?
I’d gladly write the music for it.

  2. Damn. One, your animators deserve medals. Two, your screenwriters deserve medals. Three, Liliana is now favorite tragic hero.

  3. Well. I certainly wasn’t expecting… That. From a trailer for the next set of a card game. My goodness.

    Little backstory on Liliana here:
    >Watched her brother suffer through corruption
    >Was tasked with helping cure her brother
    >Involved collecting the roots of a special tree
    >The tree had burnt down when she managed to get to it
    >She failed, her brother corrupted forever
    >Strange man appears to give her a potion recipe that uses the reactivated remains of the tree using necromancy
    >Made the potion
    >Cured her brother, but drove him insane
    >Had to literally kill her brother, because he was just a crazed mess now
    >Not only kill him, but kill him with the zombies of the people he killed (ironic)
    >Went planeswalking, dabbled more in the dark arts of necromancy, but was afraid of becoming a lich after death because of what happened to her brother
    >Liliana, afraid of dying, brokered a deal with 4 demons with Niccy B as the middle man
    >She got her powers back and became unageing from this deal
    >Later goes on to kill her demons (literal demons, not her inner demons, that’s later)
    >Free’d from the contract but not really, defaults to Nicol Bolas
    >Now has to have eternal servitude to B-Boy or become old VERY fast
    >btw her brother is now a Lich too just so we’re clear
    >She kills her brother AGAIN
    >Because, y’know, lich
    >Now sending undead fuckers to Ravnica to fuck shit up

    Long story short:
    >She failed to cure her brother
    >She tried to cure him again, but drove him insane
    >She killed him
    >She killed him AGAIN

    Relevance to the trailer?
Those two people reminded her of herself and Josu, her brother. Watching them run, and watching her try to save her brother got to her. In the end, they both died under the rubble. She tried to protect him as the rubble fell on them, but it was all for nothing, just as Liliana had tried to stop her brother from dying. She maybe thinks that dying with her brother instead of having around 4300 years of suffering would have been the better choice. Her fearing death led her to become what she is now, but in the end, she couldn’t even save her brother, so as the song says ‘In the end it doesn’t even matter’. She realises her powers were for nothing, that she’d never be able to get over her brothers deaths, or her failures to help him. Even as a powerful necromancer, there was nothing more she could do to bring her brother back.
And then, Bolas asks that she brings both of them back from the dead, and as she looks over at the pile of rubble, she finally snaps. She doesn’t want to bring them back and have them suffer the same eternal hell as what both she and her brother had experienced. She didn’t want them to be immortal, and she didn’t want to be immortal anymore either. She had had it. She knew she’d die if she denied Bolas, but she realised that death was her only exit, and the only way she would ever stop grieving.

  11. Liliana has always been an interesting pick for the poster child of black. Inherently she has been a character who has done whatever it takes to amass the power to prevent what happend to her family, and in doing so has done considerably more and more heinous acts. All in the name of her freedom. Now that her mission has been ‘completed’ and now her leash is tighter than ever from Bolas’ claws, she now digs deep into a quality that is themetically integral to black: Self-Sacrifice. Paying life as a resource has always been a part of black as a color and now it’s being well represented with Liliana’s likely final act in a blaze of glory, fighting for the freedom she has always wanted, the power to protect her friends.

I’ve never played MTG and don’t know anything about the lore, but this is an absolutely astounding trailer.

  13. Just a little context:

So pretty much planeswalkers were godlike beings that can travel across the multiverse onto different planes.

Nicol Bolas is the dragon planeswalker that you see in this video, one of the elder dragons who also happens to be a planeswalker (Double OP).

A lot of books later (like literally like 20 books later), an event called the Mending happened that had planeswalkers sacrificing their planeswalkers spark to mend rifts in the multiverse that were caused by them jumping around reality a bit too hard. During the Mending, it weakened all existing and future planeswalker sparks everywhere, rending these gods into simply gifted wizards.

Liliana is a necromancer and a planeswalker from the new generation who, centuries ago, made a pact with demons to gain immortality, since planeswalkers were no longer godlike. Unenthusiastic about being a servant to the demons, she tries to break the pact while keeping the immortality by killing all the demons who signed the pact, but here’s the twist, when the last demon dies there’s a fine print that transfers the pact to NICOL BOLAS.

During this time Nicol Bolas has been waging a war against numerous planeswalkers, trying to regain his former godlike spark since the Mending. The roster includes a plethora of great characters, but our main protagonists in the recent books are the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers sworn to protect the multiverse against the biggest threats led by Gideon Jura who you can see getting his ass pummeled.

Liliana, once a member of the Gatewatch (planeswalker power rangers), but she does not wish to die by breaking her contract, so betrays her friends and serves her master Bolas.

The video is pretty much Nicol Bolas getting ready to planeshift to Ravnica and Liliana helping him against the Gatewatch trying to stop him. That’s why her change of heart is so epic as she literally choses to turn to dust as her immortality fades and using everything she has to keep the oath she made to the Gatewatch and save the Multiverse in the final WAR OF THE SPARKS.

  14. I think this trailer has convinced me to start playing magic

  16. “Either you die a villain or live long enough to see yourself become a hero.” -Lilliana 2019

  17. The look of anger on Lily’s face after she remembers her oath and turns around is terrifying.

  18. Christian Alexander Gutierrez

That scream at the end gives me chills

  19. Why has no one mentioned how sick this Linkin Park cover is though? You should make a planeswalker in memory of Chester…

  20. >Blizzard-style cutscenes for a tabletop card game
    >Soft piano cover of a Linkin Park song
    I don’t remember planeswalking to this dimension…
