The button on nightmare could be the sound disk.
It could be covered up by the sound from the disk. If the child popped the button off nightmare (and destroy it) he would see him as he is, a blank animatronic.

No, I still think the Nightmare = Nightmarionne = Death itself theory makes a tad bit more sense. Though I guess it depends on if you think the FNAF 4 gameplay is just a dream or not.

I’ve said this often on Reddit. It also parallels Steve Snodgrass’ nightmare scenes when he is under the influence of the illusion discs in the story Help Wanted. He speaks early on of his fears, including spiders, then sees a nightmarish spider on the ceiling bust open to a bunch of little spiders. Even in the end DJ Dan The Music Man refers to what Steve is telling him as NIGHT TERRORS.
