Modern Warfare II, PR As Journalism, And Consensual Plagiarism (The Jimquisition)

When journalist Laura Kate Dale got offered a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, she received some extra fun – the chance to consensually plagiarize articles written by the game’s marketing team! Huh!

Let’s talk about THAT unethical nonsense, shall we?

  1. I lost my shit in hysterical giggles at the “NEW NEW NEW NEW” line, thats fucking absurd!

  2. I sure do love coming home from work, kicking back, and getting my

  3. OMG “magic e” is so catchy

  4. Shit becomes Shite with E.

    Magic, magic E.

  5. If I were an abused developer, I would sneak a hardware-destroying virus into the game final copy just before I quit.

  6. Is that a clip of Sarah Douglass pre-Conan the Destroyer days?

  7. So apparently all the writers of mainstream gaming journalism have enough integrity to not use that drivel, but not enough to call out Activision, apparently that is “old news.”

I would have rather them copy the drivel and put a single statement at the end covering the abuse issues, the writer would have had more integrity in my eyes. Mainstream gaming journalism is – no – has been dead for at least 10 years now, its a real shame.

  8. Magic E,,, thats a blast from the past,,,memory unlocked

  9. It’s kind of infuriating that with the new Mario + Rabbids, when someone brings up the abuse allegations of Ubisoft, people wave it away with “but not in THIS studio, not all of Ubisoft is like that!”, just because it’s fucking Mario. As long as Ives Guillemont is still CEO of Ubisoft, ALL OF THEIR STUDIOS should be scrutinized, I don’t care if X division of Ubisoft has “never” had those problems, ALL of Ubisoft should be scrutinized by proxy.

  10. Okay, here’s what I’ve found so far. Obviously there’s a lot more outlets, and there’s still some outlets that haven’t posted a review that probably will, but this is a start anyway.

Do reviews of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II mention A-B’s legal issue surrounding alleged harassment and threats of violence?

    Polygon: No mention
Kotaku: No review (but they tend to post reviews later that most)
Eurogamer: No mention – they also had a ridiculous number of guides that could possible have been consensual plagiarism
Rock Paper Shotgun: Disclaimer at the end of the review (though I think at the beginning would be better)
AV Club: No mention, though it wasn’t really a review, but an article in their “What Are You Playing This Weekend” section
    Escapist: No review
Games Radar: No review, but they had an article with a bunch of tips that didn’t mention anything about A-B

I didn’t watch any video reviews.

  11. “never compare your sensitivity to others” is actually hilarious, but not in the way those dribbling marketing goons intended.

  12. Holy fucking shit, perfect marketing copy read.

  13. I remember noticing we were at “that point” in game reviews where the abusive work environment wasn’t mentioned with Diablo immortal, I know of one reviewer I regularly followed, listed problems with the game and Activision Blizzard and did NOT mention the lawsuits, or the abuse. So I highly doubt CoD reviews will mention it.

  14. Team e are, as the Shamen once said, good.

  15. Call of Duty: Ghosts(Writing)
