Live Services Are Being Sent To Die (The Jimquisition)

As Crash Team Rumble shuts its doors and another “live service” shrivels to death in less than a year, one has to wonder how deliberate the number of sudden shutdowns are. One thing is for sure – no matter how many of them are guaranteed to fail, publishers keep launching the bloody things.

Live Service games can work, if
    1) you are not expecting an unrealistic growth within 6 month, you skeleton warriors
    2) lower your expectation as a devoloper
    3) make actually good content

  4. Get better humour.

3:12 Bobby Kotick is no longer Activision head. Update your jokes, you can do better than that.

    //edit: And bring back Commentocracy.

  6. The songs are such a treat in these videos

Squibs are the small explosives used in movie making to simulate gunshot wounds. So the fake blood sprays out on impact.

For the almighty algorithm, I pledge my comment to Steph.

A squib was a small wad of cotton used in powder firearms to keep the powder and shot separate. When a squib became damp, it would ruin the powder, preventing the gun from firing properly. The best result it would give would be for the shot to slide out the barrel anticlimactically. Hence, a damp squib became a term for a disappointing finish.

    Nice Emilio Estevez plushy.

  11. The Squib song is fucking hilarious hahahaha 😂😂😂😂

  12. I don’t think there’s a single successful service game that launched as a service. Even smaller ones like For Honor all started as multiplayer games

  13. Good video. Though it was slightly funny at 4:30 hearing the line about going over SE’s disastrous live services of late….while showing FFXIV in the background, a pretty well received MMO that’s still going strong and is is heading into its fifth expansion.

  14. The first minute and a half or so? Perfectione!

  15. It’s so cathartic to know other people think the word squib is totally ridiculous

  16. I enjoy live service games because when you find one with good gameplay you don’t have to worry about it ending like (opposite of live service) games do. There is always a new expansion to play and progression systems to keep you coming back. That is why WoW has been around for so long.

So, if I follow, the basic concept of these games is misleading advertising. I’m fairly sure there are laws about this. The industry already came under investigation because of lootboxes, this might be the next target of lawmakers…

  18. If you launch a live service and close it within one year of launch you should be forced to make your game free to all players and release SDKs that allow people who paid for the product to access other means to play the game through private servers. Companies shouldn’t be given carte blanche ability to screw over people who paid for a product without they themselves getting shafted along with the consumer.

  20. Cait Sith riding on Berk is such a powerful image.
