EU Votes In Favor Of Article 13, Giving Copyright Holders Undue Power Over Internet Platforms

The Copyright Directive, notorious for containing the dreaded Article 13, has been accepted in the European Union by five votes. Internet platforms will be under pressure to further filter out “infringing” content.

It’s a bad scheme that fails to address fundamental problems with content sharing platforms and only seeks to drag copyright law backwards instead of forwards.

All because companies feel evermore entitled to control of the Internet.

Memes are exempt – so how do they decide what constitutes a meme? Who decides that? Yeah, upload filters all the way. Voting is in May, just saying.

To quote one of the people against Article 13:
“How do you expect all of these websites can implement algorithms that can filter this content effectively?”

Member responsible for article 13: ”what’s an algorithm?”

That’s how behind the times these goons are.

  8. US:We got rid of net neutrality.
    EU:Hold my beer.

  9. A bunch of old farts making important decisions on things they know nothing about. sounds about right.

  10. i wouldn’t be surprised if article 13 actually ends up hurting the corporations as it’s going to cause corporations to have their videos copyright gridlocked as youtube bot can’t distinguish between copyrights owned by multiple subsidiaries. Also it means corporations can copyright strike each other now. So what’s going to happen is that warner brothers puts up a trailer and it gets copyright striked because the bot thinks that Warner brothers japan, warner brother uk, warner brother germany, and warner brother france actually owns it and then the trailer music gets copyright striked by 6+ artist because youtube can’t tell who’s cover it is.

Music is going to be a shit show especially for rap music as that genre is all about sampling and resampling. Their is no way youtube bot is going to be able to handle things like the message by grandmaster flash which has been sampled by just about every major artist in rap music.

  11. They get more clueless by the day. Thank you Jim!

  17. The more the Corporations push the edge….the sooner their HQs will be burnt to the ground. Because you can only push people SO FAR before they break.

  18. Because politicians get more from companies rather than individual citizens. Sad.
