Eating Artwork (The Jimquisition)

American McGee tried to make a new Alice game, Alice: Asylum. However, despite having his name on the box, Electronic Arts owns the series, and they won’t let him make it. Let’s talk about licenses, intellectual property, and what I like to call “IP hoarding.”

  1. We need more work from Exicutive Director Phenix.

  2. I’m of two minds about this one. On one hand, I agree with everything you said here. The whole IP ownership thing is such a shit show and publishers that sit on gaming IP’s while doing nothing with them just to spite anyone that WOULD are giant pieces of shit. However, in this specific instance, I can’t find myself being too upset and I’m about to spoil the fuck out of Madness Returns so I can explain why. This is your spoiler warning.

I liked the first Alice game, I really did. That was one of the earliest instances of me actually getting hyped for a game release. I was constantly on the official website every day, it was a such a great concept. Then Madness Returns comes along and explains the reason why said madness has returned is because 12 year old Alice is the victim of SA. Not just once, and not just by one man. The entire story revolves around her coming to terms with the fact that not only has her psychologist been assaulting her while also gunning for her family fortune. But every time she would retreat into Wonderland she would essentially pass out, and when she would wake up it was in a brothel, and the proprietor of the brothel had no problem letting one guy after another have their turn with Alice. And you know what? I’m good. I’m not particularly keen on seeing where McGee was going to take the story after that, sure, Alice did kill the fuck out of her doctor in the end, but still….. How do you escalate on that as a justification of why Wonderland has returned yet again while trying to keep some semblance of taste?

  3. Astro Farm? Core memory unlocked

  4. Unicronic Arts strikes again…not even giving them a CHANCE to fail.

  5. Honestly, I can kinda see American’s chain of logic.

Of Fucking Course the corpo ghouls at EA will say another Alice game isn’t worth making because it won’t sell. So crowdfund JUST THE PITCH to show that, no, actually, LOTS of people are willing to spend actual money ON ITS PITCH!

Like, it’s still actually quite weird, but I can see the strategy of trying to get around the corpo creativity lockdown in perhaps the only way he thought he had left to him.

Honestly, the idea with further refinement COULD be a good way to try and get around that argument. A Theoretical Kickstarter, Public Square Salea Figures. Ask the world at large directly “Would you buy this thing if I could make it?” And use the resulting numbers to say “This many people say they want what I want to make. They’d buy it based on everything I’ve told you. Your move.”

IDK, it just struck me that that could be an actual thing that could be useful…

  6. You owe it to yourself to check out the 2022 Hellraiser reboot. It’s weirdly good. I know the bar is severely low but still.

  7. He SOLD the IP… Over and done with… It takes a very butthurt idiot to say afterwards: “BOOHOO IT IS MY IP; IT WAS MY IDEA”. He fucking sold the IP… OFC he cannot just do a game under the same IP… Steph… Not even you are that stupid… He should never have sold the IP… But he did… And he got well paid too… HE FUCKING SOLD IT!!!! Get over it… How dafted can you be?

  8. I remember Fan4stic was made just to hoard the Fantastic 4 movie rights. Now Disney owns the studio who owned those movie rights.
    Writer Guy: “Whoops!”
    Director Guy: “Whoopsie!”

  9. Game publishers: no no we can’t make that game, it’ll never make any money.
Also game publishers: oh we couldn’t possibly part with that IP, it’s far too valuable.

  10. I thought the American Mcgee name was a bit

  11. Seeing American Mcgee leave the games industry has me acting like Wonka
[deadpan tone] “No, wait, stop, don’t”
If you make a deal with the devil don’t get mad when you hate the price.

  12. Iview copyright like Hippa. Sounds great sounds like it’s there to help the patient or the people who make the stuff but in all honesty it only helps the corporations are the hospitals hide their crimes and steal from other people. Like my God if you could just have like an unbiased third-party walk into any random place unannounced every hospital facility would fail in America. Cuz the problem is OSHA basically says we’re coming in a day or two and then the hospital makes all its employees just kind of cover all the crimes up and dust underneath the rug. And if you don’t you’re fired

  13. So, I think the sort of reasoning Mcgee was probably using for that kickstarter was something I’ve seen before a few times. Its a way of testing the waters for interest. Generally you’d show that to publishers as proof of that interest or to prove to yourself its worth the time.

  14. 14:46 Like how Disney was surprised that The Owl House was popular while releasing _Season 3_ on YouTube. There’s really no excuse for that level of incompetence.

  15. this is the most amount of anything ive ever seen of AM’s Alice

  16. I don’t think Walt was a racist. It was just the norm at the time.
