Valve Investigated In Brazil Over Game Promoting Violence Against Political Rivals

It’s a game about killing political candidates and minorities. Not the first time hate speech has appeared on Steam, likely not the last time. This one’s actually gotten Valve wrapped up in an investigation, as Brazilian authorities seek to take the spiteful little thing down.

It’s almost as if I said this would happen, and that hate speech isn’t included in the “free speech” people yell about online. Valve’s hands-off approach continues to cause trouble, as predicted.

  1. I think I speak for everyone when I say thanks for taking the time to make these. Always informative and entertaining, and we appreciate it!

  2. No video for the Jason Schreier tweets? Really looking forward to hearing your take on it, since it seemed directed right at you, Jim.

  3. As a brazillian, I really don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this.

  4. “Trump on steroids” So a Trump with an EVEN SMALLER toadstool?! How could it be possible??

  5. Dissapointed but not surprised

  6. >actual hate speech can make it onto steam with almost 0 consequences (almost)
    >lawmakers don’t really care, more interested in banning memes and policing the Internet

    Sounds about 2018

Jim. I’m SO, SO glad you covered this. Thanks, really. As a Brazilian, we’re living some dark times right now. This shit needs to stop.

  8. As a Brazilian I can say the situation here are down right unbearable related to politics, people are actually being killed or suffering aggressions because of their political views. Yesterday, a capoeira master was stabbed to death in a bar fight because he supported the opposition candidate from Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro himself was stabbed weeks before the election. So just get the picture of how fucked up things are here.

  9. Looks like this game deserves The Steam Ambassador award in The Sh!ttiest games of 2018 this year.

  10. Women are getting cornered and having swastikas carved into their flesh by Bolsonaro’s supporters, this is just another branch in a long string of hateful and violent displays that shows the true colors of the people behind him.

  11. So this wont be on your top GOTYs?

  12. The Struggle Of Michael

    Quality control = censorship

I don’t know how people make that connection. It makes no sense

  13. Valve wants to act like its facebook or twitter or youtube of games but posting something on those sites and making a game abd selling it is obviously not the same thing. I hope they understand this soon. Also, as an ex development studio, I would think they would have more respect for the craft of game making and not allow obvious hacks to give it a bad name.

  14. Good news! This video was on my subscription feed for a minute before it disappeared! Even after I refreshed the page over an over, it never came back. If I didn’t happen to notice the thumbnail out the corner of my eye I wouldn’t even know this video was posted. That’s super cool that YouTube hides content that I’m subscribed to. I love that about YouTube.

  15. This looks like a bad flash game from 2005 on Newgrounds

  16. Jim, just like Trump supporters, Bolsonaro’s minions are coming to attack you. Thank you for this video, but be prepared

  17. If you wanna have a real bad time, go to the latest “last week tonight” by john Oliver and read the comments by the fascist fans of Bolsonaro that are now popping up.

Edit: nvm just see below for an example instead.

  18. Be prepared for the bolsominions attacks.

  19. 3:37 I agree that this game is shit and has no reason to exist, but you make a really big contradiction here. Violent videogames don’t “incite violence”. That’s the kind of Fox News thinking that you’re usually against. If you argue in other videos that gamers can distinguish fiction from reality, what’s the difference between this game and games like GTA and Watch_Dogs which at multiple points require you to kill police officers?

  20. I’m brazilian and I’m honestly ashamed that this politician is so popular.
