Those Layoffs (The Jimquisition)

Close Ad ×

The tech industry is seeing massive layoffs, with Microsoft alone jettisoning 10,000 people in the face of slow growth. The key word there is “growth.” Microsoft isn’t losing money, but people are losing jobs because it ain’t making money fast enough. This is supposed to be reasonable

It’s high time the nonsensical lie corporations operate under was challenged openly.

  1. While it is nice to remember that staff members are people, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with calling workers “workers”. It helps remind the managers who actually does the work. Plus we can more easily recognize with whom we’re to unite when chain losing time comes round.

  2. Ok, this ine I have to be confused about. Xbox is killing it with its completely amazing backwords compat and dedication to customer support, something Xbox fans care a LOT more about than exclusivity and Sonytard bs, yet all anyone wants to talk about are corporate layoffs they almost definitely had good reason to make?! Ya’ll just lookin for reasons to hate xbox ngl

  3. It’s gross and sickening when you go further down the hole and see that they see a person rising out of poverty as a problem, not just on an selfish individual scale, but on a macro-scale. Prices are more or less what the market wants them to be only by virtue of certain people being unable to afford them, so even if conditions were better in some hypothetical future (and in lieu of any price controls or regulation) sick ghouls would see too many people increasing their quality of life, that they used to be unable to afford (driving up demand) as a policy failure that needs to be “fixed.”

  4. I work on contract at a Microsoft game studio. A few weeks ago, my lead warned me that she saw signs there was about to be a bunch of cost-cutting, and so new contracts might not be negotiated. She’s a very well-experienced game A.I. engineer, a fantastic mentor, and even a friend now, and she told me she’d pull what strings she could to try and protect my job. I make her work easier and quicker and I was valuable to her.

A few days later she was laid off and I’m still here on my existing contract.

    This feels awful. 🙁

  13. it’s kinda silly people get do pissed off by content warnings. do we need to make a trigger warning incase there is a trigger warning in a game? like unironically do we need that now?

  14. A thing worth noting on the topic of layoffs– Wizards of the Coast, after announcing that it was dropping the OGL 2.0 and sticking with the original OGL, also laid off about 1500 employees.

  15. It’s almost like the idea of infinite growth is incompatible with the idea of a finite planet! Funny that!
