Single-Player Healthcare (The Jimquisition)

After EA murdered Visceral and “pivoted” its Star Wars game, there has been much talk of the death of single-player games.

The Jimquisition explains just how long this debate has lasted, and why single-player is doing okay.

  1. the shop in Assasin’s Creed Origins is actualy quite alright. there’s no reason to buy anything there, only cosmetics (yeah, shop exclusive costumes suck)…compared to the shit Show Shadow of Microtransactions, Destiny2 or CoD pulled Ubisoft is the least offender in the current game lineup.

  2. I love these episodes being 20 minutes long. It’s such a treat

  3. perhaps people like single player games because the story is their own……and people on the internet are ass hats and people like to take a break from their ass hatness.

  4. Drill Queen did go away for a lil bit

  5. Thanks for the Red Dwarf reference, Jim!

  6. I completely ignored anything saying single player games were dead. Why would they be dead if we continue to want and buy them. Everything is taken so literally these days like no one can think anymore. If they are told something then that’s that it’s all taken at face value. If we buy single player games they will continue to make them if we buy into microtransactions they will continue to give us that “option”. If we don’t like what these companies are doing to our games then we should not buy them and guess what they will be forced to change. It’s what we do together that changes the outcome.

  7. i personally find it absolutely hilarious when game devs and publishers say gamers want high fidelity graphics as the devs and pubs are the ones who lead the charge for higher fidelity in the first place.

  8. I play guitar in a band, i also play guitar alone sometimes; i like them both. I play games like red orchestra 2 online alot, and sometimes i play games like bioshock; i like them both.

  9. Anything you say, no matter how long ago, can be used against you in The Jimquisition court of law 🙂

  10. People didn’t criticize linearity in the late aughts because they wanted multiplayer, they criticized linearity because they wanted more narrative choice. Not sure how you made that linearity-multiplayer connection.

  11. Put me down for a Dead Space Kickstarter as well.

  12. You didn’t mention the biggest reason why single player is going to stay. Multiplayer games inherently compete with each other more than single player games by both requiring more players and often more time from those players. Players who play single player games often play a lot of single player games, people who play multiplayer games often play a much smaller number of games. Also the standards for post launch support are much higher. Ultimately AAA wanting multiplayer to be the future is a short sighted idea that will make a few studios very rich and the rest will starve.

  13. *was probably the only other person playing Overlord*

  14. Whoa you’ve read the first law series Jim?

  15. ha ha putting nier on the list that game was a shitfest and a half that got praised only by the devs fanboys and lets not get into the PC “port” Then again jim is yet another “gaming journalist ” that ignores the shitting on a PC community that have been horrible lazy JRPG ports the latest and one of the most abhorrent being the “port” of .hack//G.U. last recode where you can’t even play the game unless you have a controller that you can use to setup a keyboard scheme and that is don’t in such a way that you don’t even know what key do what and ofc the in-game prompts all show controller keys, and ofc once you set it for a keyboard those keys make it unplayable. JESUS ASSRAPING CHRIST THIS IS 2017 YOU CAN ADD PROPER M+K SUPPORT TO YOUR 60$ GAME!! I would have an easier time strapping the console release on an emulator and playing it because thats is all this “port” is.

  16. I honestly only like multiplayer in single-player titles when it’s local co-op like they have in games like Gears of War and Halo 1-3 (I haven’t played enough of the later games to know if they still put local co-op in Halo). Those games DID have online multiplayer as well, but their co-op campaigns felt great. It was always great fun to play through those games again and again with my brother and my friends and I’m honestly really sad that local co-op story campaigns aren’t a thing so much, even in games that should be single-player that got online multiplayer forced down their throats. Games like The Last Of Us have an online multiplayer mode that feels tacked on but not even so much as the Halo style of co-op campaigns where they just add another Master Chief no one in the story acknowledges.
I would greatly prefer tacked on local co-op that doesn’t hurt the game over tacked on multiplayer that requires a hell of a lot more resources from the developers and rarely turns out better than the single-player experience.

  17. There is no one left playing single player games. I never see them in my call of duty multiplayer matches there for they do not exist. Really though they know they can get away with not having to program as big of maps, as much AI, as much of anything because in multiplayer games they can just get other people to do all the work for them.

  18. All is left to say is: Thank god for Jim Fucking Sterling, son.

  19. Jim… how can we go about applying to making sweet sweet sticky love to your creativity? I’m asking for everyone else below in the comments who are too shy to ask. Not really interested myself… nope… not me… >_> *Whistles*

  20. What’s the point of watching these videos if I’m not gonna get a LOOTBOX out of it? Just kidding thanks again for being the voice of the consumer. <3
