Shadow Of The Tomb Raider – A Shadow Of Its Former Self (Jimpressions)

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is fine. It’s simply okay, in a mundane way. While the previous games in the “reboot” continuity were great action adventures, this is predominantly a swimming simulator with a boring plot and dull backdrop.

Also, the direction this game takes, with its lacking combat and focus on restrictive exploration, is a little baffling.

  1. Shame, it looks so good still. might pick it up on sale then

  2. Shadow of the rise of the dawn of the planet of the tomb raider

  3. Sharky and George!? I dont think I’ve heard that show theme in 20 god damn years.

  4. Wow her jump and grab animations look so tacky and floaty. Even when shes running she looks like she is running underwater or in a bog or something.

  5. Seems to be reviewing rather well, people prefer more tombs and less combat. Myself included

  6. ”A Shadow Of Its Former Self” ouch

  7. 16 hours in. I like it so far but then again I love exploring the tombs more than the combat so that might be it.

  8. God modern Tomb Raider is the lamest..what happened to fighting Yetis and Dinosaurs now it just a lame Uncharted clone

  9. Here’s the thing: my favourite part of the Tomb Raider reboot was going back and looking for all the collectables and loot, because there were hardly any enemies when you went back. It was just exploring and traversing the terrain and looking for treasure. I disliked Rise of the Tomb Raiders insistence on spawning as many enemies as had been there the first time around when I just wanted to collect and explore without dealing with enemies. So it sounds like this game may actually have been made for people like me. Thanks for giving the informative review, Jim 🙂

  10. I’ve heard such mixed things about this game.
Some people say this game feels off.
Some people say this game feels more like Tomb Raider than the previous two ever had.
I’ve heard the tombs are the best tombs in the series.
I’ve heard the stealth combat scenarios sprinkled few and far between are a welcome change from the constant combat of the previous games.
But I’ve also heard the gun-play feels a little off. But you use the bow mostly anyway.
I’ve heard the difficulty options are brilliant, giving you the ability to tailor your experience to your liking.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO THINK?!
I guess I’m gonna get it and find out for myself.

  11. Back in the 90s there used to be these games called Tomb Raider clones, now it looks like Tomb Raider is the one doing the cloning.

  12. I’ve lost interest since Rise of the Tomb Raider. I personally think that game was bland. I would have preferred for the game to go more on the playful and crazy route, with crazy acrobatic gun mechanics, some dual wielding madness, and some crazy mystical boss fights. The first reveal trailer for ROTTR kind of alluded to this, that’s not what we got. This would have distinguished the game from the Uncharted series more. More like the old ones but with less janky animations weirdness. Hell, the mobile games are like this. And changing her signature weapon to the Bow and Arrow was boring AF.

  13. A lot of these animations look awful.

  14. It looks too much as a DLC/expansion rather than a new Tomb Raider game

  15. Sounds like your main issue is that the game is about raiding tombs instead of combat and setpieces. This is the Tomb Raider game I’ve wanted since the nineties, it captures that feeling of exploration and wonder Core Design originally captivated me with and it’s a damn shame critics aren’t seeing it. I loved the last two reboot games, but they felt like they focused way too much on combat than what makes Tomb Raider Tomb Raider.

  16. Tomb raider Classic : Badass Lara Croft,Dual pistols,Tombs,Puzzles,Dinasours,Yetis, polytits,Uniquely different comparing to Uncharted. Feels like you embarking on an adventure.

Tomb raider reboot : Hunter Lara Croft,Crafting, not so cool Tombs,Relies too much on graphics than actual fun,Extremely similar to Uncharted in terms of gameplay and locations, more like survival than an adventure.

Yeah…no wonder its a shadow of its former self..cus The reboot pretty much flused all the charm the classic had.
But hey.that doesnt mean its a BAD game…its still have a good story and its worth it if you get it a cheaper price and that’s about it

  17. I get what your saying, but i feel this game is better than Rise by far and even 2013 in a way. People always asked for less combat, more exploring , tombs ect. Shadow does this and its now suddnely lacking because it doesnt have the hollywood action sequences and mass gunfights anymore. Cant win i guess. For me Shadow is as close as the reboot gets to getting back to the First series of games. Most of the gameplay is in exploring, enjoying the views ect. The Jungle environment for me is beautiful and fun to explore, its not boring at all. I love the inca , aztec style vibe ect. This game is everything i wanted in the first 2 so i guess what it comes down to is people wanting different things from TR. Thats going to happen more when a franchise is so old right, all types of fans from different years wanting and expecting different things in there TR games. I will end with if you just want less combat, less OTT silly stuff and a good exploration and secrets games Shadow is your jam.

  18. 離島棲鬼

nu-tombraider is an uncharted clone without any of the charm of the uncharted games.
