Nintendo Switch Online’s Cloud Save Debacle (The Jimquisition)

Nintendo is a ridiculous company that cannot simply do something simple. There’s always a complication, a caveat, a catch. Even cloud saving, which every other platform has nailed, must be subject to Nintendo’s arcane rulings.

So, cloud saves will only work for SOME Nintendo Switch games, not ALL of them. The ones excluded are pretty heavy hitters too. Looks like another Nintendo Move to me!

  1. But Jim! They’re just staying on top and ahead of relevant problems in technology! This very year they’re also preparing for the horror that will be Y2k. Have you heard of it?! Sounds pretty bad, who knew computers couldn’t count that high!

  2. If they port Metal Gear Survive you know those $10 save slots won’t be backed up

  3. Peter Parker’s Landlord will be a playable character in Smash before Waluigi

  4. To be fair, hacking in splat2 is pretty rampant right now. Nintendo refuses to implement anticheat and the switch has a hardware level root exploit now. All you have to do to get away with hacking is crash the lobby as it ends, so nobody can report you

  5. Isn’t Nintendo worried at all to lose their online playerbase (Splatoon etc.) for suddenly introducing this paywall? I mean, we know about it, but I’m sure theres tons of kids or older people out there that might not even know or realise about this wall. The Nintendo direct had me confused before I read an article online after. (Cause I thought the same you did: “I can already do this though?”.)

  6. If the problem with games like Splatoon 2 is that they don’t want to backup save data for the game because they don’t want to mess with ranks, then why not make it just save certain things in the game and not others…? Seriously, there are extremely easy workarounds for this kind of thing. It’s an excuse.

  7. I still refuse to pay ANY console for the privilege of using my own internet to play online.

Online only games on consoles officially don’t exist to me.

Too bad everyone doesn’t abstain, then they’d all have to stop because it wouldn’t make money. But we’re talking to the some of the same people that allowed companies to push dlc, pre-orders, microtransactions, and lootboxes as far as they did. We all allow this stuff for every cent we pour into it. Paying for it is the exact same as accepting it to companies.

Companies are greedy little children. We have to be the responsible ones sadly. That doesn’t clear them of their bullshit, it just means that they won’t stop until we stop paying for their shitty practices.

  8. Like come on, Steam does this for free.

  9. It’s like Nintendo is stuck in a parallel universe where time stopped flowing 20 years ago.

  10. Forgot to mention another “wonderful” feature of Switch Online. Namely you have to log in every 7 days or you can’t even play those amazing NES games. Nintendo is so afraid you might steal Ice climbers they make sure your have an active account or block the game. Which kind of sucks for a portable game system.

If your going on a trip, maybe camping out in the wilderness you better hope they have Wifi so you can log in or you won’t be able to play Tetris any more.

  11. Nintendo is the most technologically illiterate game company there can ever be.

  12. There is your evidence.

Normal thinkers understand the importance of keeping romsites around and the benefits of hacking nintendo consoles.

  13. *Fucking Prick*

  14. “We don’t want people to cheat online” basically means their net programmers still don’t know how to create a simple transaction function. And now they expect us to pay for their ineptitude. But I can’t say I’m surprised, considering they already charge to use the Pokebank, on a series that’s been hacked to hell and back already. Nippletendo gonna Nippletendo…

  15. Saving games is a standard feature. Like a power cord. This is madness.

  16. In the context of Splatoon 2 having local save data with your ranking, not providing a way to rollback makes sense. What..doesn’t make sense…is WHY YOUR RANKING IS IN A LOCAL SAVE FILE

  17. Are they TRYING to kill consoles are a market between them? I just don’t get what goes on in these boardrooms

“hmmm our consoles aren’t as powerful as a PC… they aren’t as versatile… you can’t upgrade them easily… you can’t mod as easily… certain games just don’t work on the controller… how do we give ourselves the edge?”

    “Gate off online play?”

“GREAT! having to pay an extra fee to play online compared to people on PC will DEFINITELY make people decide to play on console instead of PC, you’re a genius!”
