2K Games quietly shunted a remaster of Mafia II out the door, and playing it reveals why the publisher hasn’t been particularly loud. It’s a load of rubbish.
A shockingly poor revision of a game that hadn’t aged all that well to begin with, Mafia II: Definitive Edition is definitively inferior.

These developers have become like the Mafia themselves, releasing low quality trash onto the market like watered down alcohol during Prohibition.
I recommend taking a look at Digital Foundry’s analysis. It seems the PS4 pro version is completely borked.

However, I’d have to admit, I’d love if a ‘speed control’ function were in more games.
I cant remember how many times ive lost a particular mission or segment because of the garbage concept of ‘controlling your speed’ manually in a video game.
I could see it working particularly well with the ‘need for speed’ and ‘midnight club’ games

My memories of Mafia 2 were a decent open world with a cool setting and soundtrack. The story was the focus and I enjoyed how it unfolded even if the gameplay wasn’t anything particularly interesting. The main thing is the open world wasn’t littered with busy work side missions and instead the approach to realism was a welcome change. Fuck the 2K bullshit though and the low effort remaster

I have to admit everything Jim hates about the gameplay I love! My favorite thing about mafia is the speed limits I’ve just never seen that in another game. I love the story it’s stayed with me for years and I really enjoy it. But I have to agree the remaster is awful.
