Is 17 Hours Too Short For A Videogame? (The Jimquisition)

Is Cult of the Lamb a scam at “only” 17 hours? I mean, let’s be honest, we’re not here to seriously discuss an assertion that ludicrous… are we?

  1. I’ve more or less given up on gaming. I still play, but it’s mostly old shit (or faux old shit). My three favorite games of all-time are *highly* replayable, though: _Rollercoaster Tycoon, Betrayal at Krondor_ and the original _Deus Ex._ And my favorite game series, _Metroid,_ is always a joy to go back to. And I’d be remiss not to mention a slew of Mario and Zelda games I never tire of,

  2. Depends on how much I enjoy the game. A lot of my favourite games can take 50-100+ hours, but I also love me some Luigi’s Mansion 1, which I can finish in under 5 hours. It really varies from game to game to me

  3. Every super villain needs to start somewhere. Good luck!

  4. You are my favorite Paradiesvogel !!!

  5. Hey I totally get not talking about all the heavy stuff. Constantly being around that stuff can really weigh somebody down, taking breaks from it is good for you!

  6. I’ve paid more for shorter games. It doesn’t matter.

  7. I agree, you should take a break, it can’t be healthy mentally shifting through the morbid self perpetuating shit that is the games industry. I am glad that you do it though, because not many people seem to and so many more don’t seem to care. As for the games time and replay-ability argument… I know they are long but I think I replay at least one of final fantasy 7, 9 or X almost every year. If a game is good enough you can play it again and enjoy it just as much if not more than before. I still remember the first time I figured out how to get Vincent in FF7, it was on my 3rd playthrough because I never had the guides back when I was a kid.

  8. I think if people are so scared of spending their money in a game they would finish too quickly, maybe they should try to take their time a little more in the games they buy, like truly explore all of what it offers and really settling in without rushing the objective too quickly. I get it’s probably not what some might like to do, but I think taking the time to enjoy the game and going slowly is one of the best way to fully enjoy a video game. Then of course, you could always challenge yourself with a higher difficulty or setting challenge to yourself, like I did for BOTW: never teleport and never register a horse. It truly bumped the number of hours spent in the game that’s for sure!

  9. So…. 17 hours. Assuming I devote all my time on this one game, it would take me 2-3 weeks to finish it.

  10. The industry has tried too hard to bloat everything into a “forever game,” and it shows it’s really rubbed off on people.
I’m reminded so strongly of the Infinite Hole from Stanley Parable. Which was absolutely brilliant in every way, by the way.

  11. Is Craig the new chip?

  12. Hey Jim, are you over video games? Just not as into them anymore?

  13. I’m really gonna miss the sporadic fans and bigots but Charlie the Creepy Basement clown nearly makes up for both.

  14. One of my favorite games from last year was 3 and a half hours. It made me cry and it was great. I love shorter experiences. I appreciate them incredibly because anything other than like your Personas, I can’t stand 100+ hour experiences, especially from the AAA industry because its mostly filler with nothing really *engaging*.

  15. What the hell? The discourse on this game isn’t that a single playththrough is short. It’s that the game is an unfinished fucking mess that is still unstable. It was literally unplayable a week ago.

  16. With CotL, I think the problem isn’t length, but imbalanced rewards. Like it’s not that the game is 15 hours, it’s that I’ve hit all the important unlocks by hour 7 because so many unlocks are easy to hit. From there it’s just “try not to die and hope for an 11th hour twist to the mechanics”. If the game was the same length but the amount of devotion or power from sermons needed for an upgrade was higher (especially from sermons, it gets to 100 per level for every level and you can easily hit 30+ per sermon). If this were better balanced I’d be happy with 10 or even 5 hours. Like shit I played Heroes of Ruin on 3DS constantly and that game is 6 hours long per playthrough At Most.

  17. I don’t care about playtime that much anymore. I already have far to many games/hobbies which basically are infinite time sinks…

  18. instead of asking how long something takes to beat, people should ask how long is it consistently fun
