Expect More Pre-Order Early Access Releases (And Expect Them To Get Worse)

Because the industry is TOTALLY healthy and NOT AT ALL broken, “AAA” publishers have found yet another way to avoid simply giving you a product for a simple cash trade.

Pre-order Early Access has been growing in popularity these last few years, and now they know they’ve gotten away with it, publishers are starting to push the envelope more and more. And they’re successfully using them to sell special editions, so this is only going to get more exorbitant! Yippee.

  1. I pre ordered this video. Pre order bonus was a push notification.

  2. Hey Jim, agreed its gonna get far worse. Triple AAAAAAAAAAAYY Games are made for shareholders now, not us gamers.

  3. If people stop pre-order all this nightmare will die

  4. My cat heard Jim’s voice and ran into the room to cuddle and watch with me.

  5. In fact, pre-emptively expecting things to get worse is the only way to stay sane nowadays.

…As you can see, it’s not working particularly well.

  6. A couple guys in my clan sounded like a teen in love playing bfV during the origin Early Access period – until the topic of bugs came up. So long as people encourage this garbage, we’ll keep taking a trip to the dump.

  7. increasing prices 15% then taking 15% off is a discount of 2.25%, bargain!

  8. Press F to pay respects for people who pre-ordered Fallout 76

  9. Can I please pre-order the Bullshit Free Edition? It comes out Tuesday, it’s worth 60 bucks, comes with everything, have a good day.

  10. Has anyone noticed a bizzare trend in the AAA industry where if a trick to get money from you succeeds, they double down on it to make more money from it. But if a trick fails, they also double down on it to make it’s money back. So in the end they double down regardless of its succes.

  11. So $60 AAA games now come with a 3-day ban out of the box? Nice.

  12. BFV isn’t even released. The battle royale crap ‘firestorm’ isn’t out, and neither is the co-op mode ‘combined arms’
At least other devs who publish an incomplete work in progress early access game charge 30 dollars, not 90.
What’s next, a payment plan for patches? Buy the deluxe edition and get the 1.32 patch 2 weeks early?

  13. Jim’s videos are basically a vast catalogue of “what not to do” for prospective game makers. In a sane world they’d be mandatory viewing, but in a sane world they probably wouldn’t be needed as much. Cest la vie….

  14. Love it when Jim says “tRiPpLe AyE video games”
    Gets me every time.

  15. Usually when Jim Sterling predicts something, that something happens… Get ready for the tide of pre-orders accompanied by all of the pre-order bs!

  16. There should only ever be three versions of a game at most.
    Base game.
Special/Deluxe Edition – has some extra in game bonuses and DLC for free and whatnot.
Collectors Edition – same as Special/Deluxe, but this one comes with the toys and shit and is like $500.

  17. I’m sticking to indie games for awhile… I don’t mind waiting a couple years for AAA complete definitive special editions to go on sale anyways
