Enchanted Portals – A Shockingly Brazen Cuphead Ripoff? (OMGH)

Enchanted Portals is a game that’s found itself getting a lot of attention… not necessarily for the right reasons. Or maybe they ARE the right reasons. Who even knows?

Basically, it mimics not just the art style, but the entire gameplay of Cuphead, and everyone has noticed because it’s impossible to NOT notice. Quite what the developers are hoping for with this brazen behavior is beyond me. I don’t even know what to make of it.

It’s clearly ripping off Cuphead, but it took a ton of effort and uses fully original characters, so it’s almost unfair to say it’s “just” a rip-off. But it is. But it kinda isn’t? Or is it? Yes. No. WEIRD!

  1. I’m a “imitation is the greatest form of flattery” kinda guy, so I’m perfectly ok with this.

That being said, its evident that the art is nowhere near the amazing quality and fluidity of Cuphead’s. Which is fair enough, since Cuphead’s art was made by hand, which I think is crazy even if the end result is amazing.

  2. Honestly, it’s the fact the they copied everything about Cuphead in terms of the boss fights. They’re the same boss fights with original characters.
Which is weird cause the team is obviously talented. But they was lazy with original gameplay designs. So honestly, I wouldn’t care if they succeed or didn’t.

  4. If the reasoning behind this game is: “we loved Cuphead, and we wanted to play more Cuphead, so we did our own Cuphead.”
    I’m OK with it.

  5. I remember when every FPS was being called a “DOOM CLONE”

  6. The issue for me is that it looks like the gameplay is almost exactly the same-

On the topic of Zelda clones, you take something like Okami and put that against Zelda- it shares many of the same gameplay features, with an incredibly unique artstyle and story, but perhaps more critically, it has a unique type of gameplay that distances itself away from which it has drawn inspiration.

  7. I think this can be considered a prime example of the phrase “imitation is the greatest form of flattery.”

  8. I think maybe “Cuphead-like” might end up its own “genre” like how “Souls-like” is its own genre now.

  9. Without the artificial grain of old films, this game actually looks more like a Flash made cartoon. One that takes the 30’s motif.

  10. “Look and Feel” battles have already been fought in court and deemed acceptable, so there’s no legal problem here (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer) so it all comes down to: are you interested in a game like this?
    …Sure?

Not as refined as Cuphead, but frankly, the quality of work in that one was astounding. This one is at least well above average for an indie title.

  11. fuk it we had an era where there were countless decently made first person shooters that all had extremely similar aesthetics.

Bring on the era of Indy bullet hells that all use the silver age cartoon art style.

“It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ’em.”

  13. 4:20 Jim just added that cats face to his Cartoon image’s Collection.

  14. I say this with no ill will meant towards these devs whatsoever;

    “Can I copy your homework?”
“Yeah just change the answers a little.”

  15. Idk. This seems like people who do Souls-likes. I think this is fine.

  16. me whenever I see Bloodstained footage: OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…………….*fades out of existence*

  17. Okay, since you asked for thoughts, I’m going to give them. Haha.

Honestly, Jim, I like this a lot. Why? Well, it’s Cuphead, but not Cuphead. Does it look like it? Yup. Play like it? Yup. But *is* it Cuphead? No. As far as I know, legally, it is “in the clear”. And, unlike other clones/”rip offs”/”inspired by” games, it looks legit. It looks like whoever wanted to do this, loved Cuphead and wanted to make a great game, just like it, and I have no issue with that.

And, honestly, I think it has a market. If someone came up to me and said: “Hey, Striker, I just got done playing Cuphead. I love the game, but I wish I would play more.” I could say: “Well, there is no official Cuphead sequel, but if you want that game, but with different characters, play Enchanted Portals. It looks and plays as good as actual Cuphead. Enjoy.”

So, yeah, that’s my thoughts on it *”Enchanted Portals. A great game, if you want to play more Cuphead and are too impatient to wait for an official sequel. Have fun!”*

  18. I’m gonna build my own Cuphead, with blackjack and hookers.

  19. Someone: “It’s a Cuphead ripoff”

    Alright.
    I’ll take 3 more.

  20. Well that’s how “soulslike” genre started.
