Electronic Arts wants you to give it all of your money as its business model shifts more and more to microtransactions and gambling. It’s not above being positively vile in this endeavor.
EA is doing all it can to funnel its FIFA players toward one single mode – FIFA Ultimate Team, the mode that runs on loot boxes. I think we can safely call the company’s reckless and predatory behavior evil now.
My immediate reaction:

As someone who has played FIFA games since I was 6 in 2007, there are literally game modes which are essentially frozen in time and have never been changed or improved since the introduction of Ultimate Team… They knowingly allow the rest of the game to be crap to drive people towards ultimate team where all their innovation and effort are directed

As a mental health professional I want to chime in and say that the psychology behind loot boxes and Microtransactions is not fancy or sophisticated – it’s the kind of thing you would understand on the first day of an introductory psychology class. It doesn’t take a genius or expert to understand what is going on, or to see why it’s exploitative. In my view, Jim is as qualified as anyone else about how these practices are psychologically exploitative and damaging.
