Death’s Gambit – The Dark Souls Of Dark Souls Copycats (Jimpressions)

A pretty decent, very well presented 2D action platformer, Death’s Gambit maybe could’ve done with aping Dark Souls a little bit less.

  1. Why do you call it Jimpressions if you’re never impressed?

  2. The game looks pretty good.

  3. I also picked the acolyte of death. And yeah, the stamina system is shit in this game. I only beat 2 bosses before I got bored and went back to monster hunter world

  4. SINISTER OBLITERATION

Its the Dark Souls of Salt and Sanctuary, get it right.

  5. This is the Dark Souls of Jim Sterling videos about the Dark Souls of the Dark Souls of other things.

  6. Honestly, the art and character design sell this for me alone. Gonna be picking this up when I get the opportunity; thanks for alerting me to this game’s existence along with giving proper forewarning about some of its issues, Jim!

  7. _Prepare to Why._

  8. Jim, regarding your problem with running out of stamina, I feel like you never learned to parry.
    EDIT: git gud.

  9. Wow geez a stamina meter that determines whether you can attack OR dodge? It’s like we solved this problem over 18 years ago in a Flash game by just having a dedicated attack bar and a dedicated dodge bar!

  10. I need to remember to turn my volume down whenever I watch your videos lol that intro is loud but got my attention

  11. Dead Cells plays really well, but I hate it. I hate that It’s ruled by a big RNG. You can’t just do what you want and progress normally. Even though this game is mechanically worse, for me it’s way better than Dead Cells. Also you’re dodging attacks you can just move away from normally, that’s part of your issue.

  12. Salt and sanctuary did the 2d souls better imo.

  13. I hate stamina meters simply because most people don’t seem to understand what makes them work well in games. The game looks great but devs really need to learn to take inspiration from what they love, and not just try to copy it

  14. i like the design of the OwlKing.

  15. The devs mentioned on Steam that they will address the stamina system. Hopefully they’ll address it well enough.

  16. The Filip Miucin of Dark Souls.

  17. I was going to write a witty comment here but my Youtube stamina meter is running ou-

  18. What you failed to mention because it seems you can’t get over the dark souls comparisons.

    – Unique bosses with varied mechanics in a unique setting.

    – Excellent writing and voice work with a more direct narrative.

    – Haste improves stamina regen, and there’s stamina healing potions as well.

    – A variety of abilities per weapon type that you can build your strategy and play style around.

    – Intuitive and a much less grind heavy upgrade system.

    – Talent tree adds some new mechanics to the game, like air dash.

    – Many bosses have a heroic rematch which increases the difficulty by adding numerous new mechanics and changing up fight pattern. These are also a great way to get gear and currency.

    – Rewards you for exploring areas you might not be leveled for with already upgraded loot.

Overall I feel it’s a solid game that does enough to separate it from just being a dark souls clone. I would compare it more to a SOTN due to its narrative structure and map lay out. I would say anyone who likes dark souls or metroidvania games give it a shot. It’s a bit rough around the edges but I feel most will find a very fun, similar but different experience if you stick to it.

  19. Imo the Owlking design reminds me of the Leshen in the Witcher
