Deadly Premonition 2 Director Apologizes For All The YIKES, Plans To Fix It

Swery65 is a game director I’ve always admired, what with me being one of Deadly Premonition’s more notable advocates. I was so thrilled to play the sequel, but came away a bit heartbroken for several reasons.

Those reasons – chiefly the painful framerate and terrible trans representation – are being taken seriously by the director, who is going so far as to rewrite sections of the game that people found hurtful. With an apology, Swery said he was going to consult with people and run “sanity checks.”

The framerate, while still lacking a plan of action, is also going to see some attempted improvement.

Some are now (of course) complaining about censorship and pandering, but it’s clear Swery had an intent with Deadly Premonition 2, and wants to rewrite portions to bring the game in line with that intent.

It’s something games do all the time, using the mutable nature of the medium to improve. Some people only have a problem with that mutability in certain… specific… cases.

Good thing they recognized the faults, apologized and didn’t just deflect the criticism by quoting Kurt Kobain and filing DMCA’s.

  2. *Game doesn’t even come with an executable file*
Hardcore fans: “If you don’t like it, you are not a fan”

  3. I have to say, in a world where game makers often fail to go as far as merely acknowledging that they made a mistake. Swery not only acknowledging it, but trying to make it better is really appreciated.

I for one am sick and tired of you, and your Hollywood elite’s agenda of having to put decent frame rates in every game. It sickens me the way the left is always complaining about how low frame rates in games are. Let me tell you something, back in my time, if we got 15 frames a second in a game, we were happy. They even sell monitors now that can go up to 144 frames a second. It’s disgusting.

“I’m the one writing the scenario. So the characters are not responsible. My fault. Please don’t hate them” might be the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard from a creative. Good on him for acknowledging, and hopefully addressing, DP2’s shortcomings, it really seems like he has the best intentions and, like with everything he does, the execution just doesn’t always echo the sentiment.

  6. Does anyone else feel like that statement he released is the most genuine apology we’ve received from a video game representative in years?
Compared to all the half-arsed apologies we receive from other publishers; the difference in wording and tone is night and day.

  7. I’d say he’s looking to fix a mistake rather than censoring it, Swery clearly has an affinity for these matters so I can’t see him being purposely malicious.

  8. The framerate issue was like a weird “Emperor’s New Clothes” situation. No one wanted to complain about it and be the only person “not in on it”, so they went out to praise the shitty framerate while a fat old man danced nude down the promenade. Then the director admitted that was a mistake and..
    My how silly everyone looked

  9. Wait a minute…. THAT’S Deadly Premonition 2? I thought it was another one of those garbage asset flips that pop up on Steam. 0_o Anyway….
It’s interesting to note for the “Don’t censor yourself” crowd that I learned from Overly Sarcastic Productions that apparently Charles Dickens, as in the author of A Christmas Carol among other things Charles Dickens, after hearing from a friend that the representation of a certain character bothered him, Charles went back and changed it. I forget which story it was.

  10. It does make me wonder why I watch this channel when this video is the only thing Ive heard about this game other than that it exists. Im so detached from video games these days that I mean… what an I even doing. I guess I just enjoy hearing Jim rant about things? That cant be healthy

  11. Bad framerate will never be part of the charm of a game. At least a steady framerate is an expectation of every game.

  12. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I feel like when Swery said “”I’m the one writing the scenario. So the characters are not responsible. My fault. Please don’t hate them” he didn’t only mean that actual characters themselves, but the people involved in bringing those characters to life too. He’s saying “please don’t hate on these characters or those who simply did their jobs in helping me bring these characters to life, it is not their fault, the fault is all mine”, which is a fantastic trait as someone in a position where they are leading/directing, as well as just a very decent thing to actually care about in general, especially in this day an age where game directors and the like don’t seem to give much of a shit when any persons involved with their projects gets shit on, like, maybe they’ll make some vague acknowledging statement for good PR, but they won’t go as far to take responsibility or even bother tackling the problem.

Swery is a crazy motherfucker, but he’s a crazy motherfucker who has a heart, and honestly, if you ask me, that’s the best kind of person. Somebody who is just silly and nonsensical a lot, but is clearly capable of empathy and compassion as well as self-reflection and self-improvement. Kudos to him, we need more people like him, not only in the gaming industry, but just in the world in general!

  13. 6:25-6:42 That’s the Westboro Baptist Church in a nutshell.

  14. I legit said “awww” at that letter, too! I’m glad Jim made this video & I am glad Swery loves his characters and and and I’m so glad to hear there will be some fixes/additional consulting. Everything Jim said in this video could have been my inner monologue when thinking about DP2. I respect Swery, and I hope he can get his vision out into the world in the way he intended, because given his history, I really believe he feels like he didn’t get it right.

  15. Wait a minute. 3:35 There are people who think MGS _ISN’t_ political? How? It’s one of the most political games I’ve ever played, actually it’s probably _the_ most political game I’ve ever played.

Damn, maybe I’m more naive than I thought because I was genuinely taken aback by that lol.

  16. I can’t believe that we live in an age where owning up to your mistakes is seen as censoring yourself, I guess doubling down really is the new standard. Thank God for Jim Sterling
