One of the worst parts of it was Jim’s sheer disappointment, when a guy as cynical as that expected better, on top of the fact that it’s not just the people who send the Emails who look terrible, but it also reflects poorly on Jim, too. Ironic that the same people who get angry over bullshit practices in the industry then proceed to pull something like that…

Alex Mauer is a bad person. It is therefore the responsibility of those who stand in opposition to Mauer to be better people. Therefore, those who hate Mauer for irrational harassment should not do the same.

To say this is supremely disappointing is an understatement, on two fronts. Firstly, as a fan- Alex Mauer is an artist who’s work I’ve been aware of largely through netlabels like 8bitpeoples, II Music, and Pterodactyl Squad, and a lot of it stood out as incredibly forward thinking chiptune music that bucked a lot of the trends of the style. Hell, I knew of this controversy in the first place through being a follower of her bandcamp page, and as far as I knew it was entirely the developers of Starr Mazer DSP who were in the wrong (it goes without saying that this was the result of deliberate framing on her part, in addition to the fact that I- and likely a lot of other fans of hers- was entirely unaware of the DMCA Takedown fuckery taking place).
Secondly, it’s disappointing as a fellow musician. I’m by no means a big league composer/artist, but I’ve worked (and am currently working) on some very small game projects, and run a tiny netlabel in my spare time. I’ve prided myself on making the business side of music affairs as friendly and open as possible, and when and where problems have come up I’ve taken them to the source and solved them. I can’t think of anything worse then punishing people who aren’t even involved in the situation, and continuing to see thenselves as the one in the right even when it’s clear to basically everyone that they are very much not. That she’s been deliberately framing herself as the victim to her fans- and punishing even us/potential future fans by deleting her entire back catalogue from said bandcamp and shutting down her website, in addition- is just… shameful. Childish, even. It is the kind of behaviour that has no place in a professional environment, and I sincerely hope she sees the error of her ways somewhere down the line. But I shan’t hold my breath.
Needless to say I’m disappointed in the folks who went on the harassing spree all the same- in fact, I’m actually kind of sickened by them even more, because of their even more deluded perception of holding the moral high ground by steeping to vile threats and personal attacks. That they went to entirely the wrong individual- because they were too stupid to realise the email wasn’t Alex’s, somehow- just make it even worse. What a bunch of poxy flippin’ Skeleton Warriors.
