Attention To Detail, Obsession With Detail (The Jimquisition)

The “AAA” game industry loves its lavish detail, from intricate gameplay systems to dazzling graphics. Can they go too far though? Absolutely they can.

Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 are impressive productions, but all that detail can get in the way of the entertainment. Let’s look at which games go so far that they produce what I call “Holy Grail Fog.”

  1. In The Mind of Kibara

Got in here so early Youtube thought it was still privated.

  2. Finally, Monday can truly begin.

  3. Started to get worried this would be “the” Monday.

  4. For those wondering. The vid took forever to upload and process. That’s why it was late.

  5. Big thanks to YouTube for taking five hours to upload this 15 minute video today. And also for keeping it private after I made it public for at least six refreshes. Love ya, ya big piece o’ fucking shit.

  6. It’s depressing that so many games could be improved by REMOVING stuff. I miss complaining about 6-hour SP campaigns

  7. 0:46 Jim Sterling missed his calling as an opera singer…dang…

  8. Man I was getting scared Jim was gonna miss his first monday

  9. TheFlusteredCustard

I thought the halloween episode is the comments section after you criticized Red Dead Two

  10. The jimquisition has become my weekly Monday reminder

  11. Don’t worry Jim about not having a Halloween episode, the triple AAAAA game industry and it’s greed/stupidity is the scariest thing you could cover.

  12. I’m very glad you made an episode on this because I’ve been wanting to say this since your review of it last week: why in the hell would you ADD features that only exist to inconvenience the player. Cuz correct me if I’m wrong but I was pretty sure the point of adding features in subsequent sequels was to make the game smoother. Hunting wasn’t all that fun in Red Dead 1 but…this sounds like they actively tried to make it worse. Also no joke, the tedious ass looting animations is exactly why I actually stopped looting bodies in RDR1. It was just so goddamn inconvenient when in other games you push a button and automatically have the loot. Very annoyed they didn’t change that.

  13. “This video requires payment to watch”… wtf?!

  14. Realism =/= Immersion

  15. Eh, I disagree, this is more of a matter of taste than a hard and cold rule.

  16. There is a problem with the question “does it make the game fun?”, in the sense that “fun” is something very subjective. In a world where the Arma series is a comercial success, there are a lot of players out there that do, indeed, find those tiny details fun.

  17. Well, I get your point, but don’t you find it’s also a fair point to make – for example in the specific cases of the hunting stuff and horse mechanics in Red Dead Redemption 2 – that there’s many people out there for whom the obsessive detail acts as a strong immersion factor, because they enjoy the realism because it’s realistic?
Sure, this doesn’t go for everything (like the weighty walking), but in the mentioned cases, don’t you think it’s a fair point to make?

  18. This is probably the first video of yours that i completely disagree with i feel like games like this have a place in the industry i understand why you may dislike the games like rdr2 but this isn’t The holy grail and it’s not trying to be.

  19. I think somebody got tired of waiting to wait.

  20. One of the reasons why I love Rockstar games is because of the stupid amount of detail in them.
